The Halifax Estates Story…

Halifax Estates originally opened in the mid-1970s and has grown into a 430-home, resident-owned manufactured home community for people 55 and older.

But that transition didn’t happen overnight. We formed the Halifax Mobile Home Estates Association, Inc. and started on the path to resident-ownership. That’s when, with the help of Cooperative Development Institute (CDI) and ROC USA, LLC, we purchased and took control of our community on October 13, 2017.

Now, the resident-owned community (ROC) is not only a successful business, but also a thriving neighborhood. The process of the resident-owned community buying the land beneath our neighborhood brought this community closer together. Not only do we know far more of our neighbors than ever before, but we look out for one another, too. And with no outside landlord to report to, we’re the envy of other nearby manufactured home communities.

Our Member households elect our Board of Directors, which works with a property management firm and also appoints various volunteer committees to help with special projects, celebrations, community improvements and more. The Board submits a budget every year, and the entire Membership votes on it and any changes to the rent before the budget becomes official. We’re running the business that is our community on our terms, by our rules, for the betterment of ourselves and our neighbors.

Halifax Estates is a well-established community for people age 55 and over who enjoy a small town feel with easy access to the train, Boston and Cape Cod. An on-site club house offers various activities, including dances and flea markets. Every Monday we play Bingo. We have a gym to work out in, our library offers ample reading opportunities, and our workshop stocked with tools offers endless possibilities to design and create projects. Pool tables in the club-house lend to hours of fun with neighbors. The outdoor space includes a horseshoe pit and a bocce court. A singing group meets weekly and offers concerts to residents and entertains in area nursing homes. Once a week, we have crafters who meet and work on projects. Each year we hold a Craft Fair in our community center. The proceeds are donated to provide gifts for kids in need during the holidays and then hold a community wrapping party. The Helping Hands Committee has been assisting struggling residents for many years with heating bills, medical expenses, and home repairs, and other expenses. Fundraisers are held to support these efforts, and recipients are kept anonymous. We aren’t just a place to live – we are a community that cares for its neighbors inside Halifax Estates and beyond.

Our wide streets and maintained homes provide a community-feel that is welcoming and friendly. Grocery stores, fine restaurants, and public transportation are all close by. Historic downtown Plymouth is a 20-minute drive. You can be on the beach in 20-minutes for an afternoon in the sun. For those wanting to explore, Boston is 45 miles away, and the Cape Cod Canal is 30 miles away. Members enjoy taking a bus to the casinos or into Boston for the day. Looking for an outdoor activity? Head to East and West Lakes, just three minutes away, renowned for largemouthed bass, and white and yellow perch. If golf is your pastime, the Country Club of Halifax is five minutes from our community. Our convenient location gives us access to countless amenities and opportunities.

Ask anyone who lives in Halifax Estates, and we’re sure they’ll tell you it’s a little slice of heaven.
